During half term, Mrs Hughes and Mr Crossland returned to Madagascar along with pupils Seoirse Hughes and Sam Crossland to inaugurate the two projects that have been funded by the amazing fund raising efforts of the pupils at Bryn Elian. On the 29th May 2010, they visited the school at Tokotanitsara to take part in the inauguration ceremony. The welcome they received was overwhelming. There were in excess of 400 people at the school who all took part in what is best described as a ‘carnival of celebration’. There was singing, dancing, music as well as a more formal opening ceremony. During the ceremony, Sam read out a letter that had been written by a group of Year 7 pupils from Bryn Elian. Seoirse officially opened the school when he cut the ribbon. This was followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The event was described by one of the locals as “the biggest thing that has ever happened to our community”. The following day they visited the rural village of Ialaroa where Bryn Elian has built four water taps which provide clean water to the village. Previously, the villagers walked for miles to collect polluted water which obviously caused serious health issues. Once again the reception was simply amazing. The villagers are so grateful to the pupils and staff of Bryn Elian for the massive difference this project has made to their lives. Again there was a real carnival involving music and dancing. Both events were shown on national television the following day, illustrating the huge difference Bryn Elian has made to these two communities. Both projects have been managed by the Madagascar Development Fund whose Patron, Brian Donaldson said: “Tiana and Nicole join me in thanking you for your enthusiasm for helping poor communities in Madagascar, and for your leadership in communicating that enthusiasm to the pupils and staff of Bryn Elian. You and they can be truly proud of the very real difference you have made to the people in these two desperately poor and needy communities.” A massive thank you to each and every one of you for your hard work and fundraising efforts. You should be truly proud of what you have all helped Bryn Elian achieve. |
