Creative & Performing Arts at Ysgol Bryn Elian

Studying Performing Arts

We are a lively and thriving department with a reputation in the local community for high quality performance work. In our teaching we ensure that pupils not only progress to the best possible level, but that they enjoy learning. Pupils, in addition to classroom lessons, have access to a wide and exciting range of extra- curricular activities and individual instrumental lessons.

Music is studied by all pupils at KS3 and covers a wide range of topics such as Medieval, Pop and Gamelan Music. At KS4 pupils have the opportunity to study GCSE WJEC Music (from Baroque to Minimalistic Music) and Drama (where they can develop their acting skills). At KS5 pupils have the opportunity to study A’ level Music and BTEC Level 3 Performing Arts.

Pupils are encouraged to perform and have the opportunity to take part in a range of performances from traditional concerts and musicals to talent shows and band nights. Our most recent annual musicals have been “Chicago”, "The Wizard of Oz" and "Little Shop of Horrors". We also hold an annual carol service in our local community, at St John's, Old Colwyn, led by the school orchestra and choirs.

Pupils also regularly participate in local and national competitions such as the Urdd Eisteddfod and the North Wales Choral Festival and in events run by national organisations such as the National Youth Theatre of Wales.

Each year we run an event to help pupils make a smooth transition from their primary school to us. Over the past few years, our pupils have written, rehearsed and performed a unique Bryn Elian version of “Cinderella” and an eco-friendly version of “Aladdin”.
